HOME Freebie CD's
In recent years there has been a trend amongst newspaper and magazine publishers to run 'Free CD/DVD' promotions, in an attempt to boost circulation and sales.
The whole thing started off with 'free' CD's - usually containing hits from the past, tracks from unsigned performers or 'exclusive samples' from an artist with a new album to promote.
The Mail on Sunday has started to offer complete albums - most notably the most recent album by Prince, "Planet Earth" and the 'classic' Simply Red album "Stars" - as well as complete original soundtrack albums. A small, but gradually increasing, number of artists are releasing new albums (comprising completely new material) via newspapers, usually followed by a 'deluxe' version being made commercially available at a later date.  Early examples of this include Prince and McFly.
The CD's have reduced in number and frequency, mostly being replaced as offers with DVD's of Films or TV episodes, but a few do still appear from time to time.

PLEASE NOTE:  This page contains a lot of pictures, which may well take some time to load up.  Please be patient and, if things seem to have got stuck, hit 'Refresh' or the equivalent!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Copyright exists in all the images on this page.  My use of these images does not, and should not be considered to, indicate the approval of the relevant copyright holders.
Should said copyright holders require me to remove these images, I will willingly do so.
These are scans of the CD's in my collection - where possible I've included details of which newspaper or magazine the disc came with.  I've stuck to 'Single Artist' CD's - i.e. those which predominantly feature one artist or group rather than the multiple artist compilations that are still popular with some of the weekend tabloids.  that's not to say I won't include them at some point, but not just yet - it takes time to scan that many CD covers! None of these are currently for sale, so please save your fingers and don't send me emails asking!  If you are keen to get hold of any of them, however, try looking on eBay.co.uk (link provided!) where you might find some of them on sale for quite reasonable prices!  (Please note: following the links to ebay.co.uk takes you away from this page unless you right-click and 'Open in New Window'!)

Eighties Interlude!
I don't normally bother with newspaper freebie CD's that require a token redemption, but the following discs are a rare exception.  For two weeks in September 2008, the Daily Mail offered a different complete original 'Classic' CD from the 1980's; these were big sellers in their day (which also happened to be MY day - the Eighties were the years in which I really started to buy records and, eventually, CD's) and contain some of the most successful hits of the decade.  It so happened that I was on holiday during this period and so was able to pick up a few of the CD's (normally I don't have easy access to WH Smith or Tesco, the usual redemption stores for Daily Mail offers) and the rest I picked up on eBay or in charity shops (a great place, incidentally, to look for 'freebie' CD's and DVD's of all sorts!)
The following are displayed in no particular order, apart from the first, Spandau Ballet's "True", which was the first in the set and was included in the Saturday edition of the paper, rather than being a token redemption as per the rest of the set.
