Shatner. Simon & Schuster. Double CD/Double Cassette/Single
Video
This is the third H.G.Wells classic to
be adapted by the Alien Voices team, (the others are "The
Time Machine" and "The Invisible Man")
and, as before, it's very well done.Nimoy and de Lancie star as the first
men to land on the surface of the moon, where they encounter a race of
Moon beings, headed by the Great Lunar (played by William Shatner).
Ethan Phillips (Neelix in "Voyager"), Dwight Schultz (Lt. Reg Barclay from
"Star Trek The Next Generation") and Kurtwood Smith (who has appeared in
a number of Trek roles, amongst other things) all take a variety of roles,
including villagers, Moon creatures and the like.
The story is nicely done, the dubious
accents are kept to a minimum and the Moon creatures are given some interesting
vocal effects. Again, like the rest of the Alien Voices productions,
this recording goes back to the original novel rather than the many other
adaptations, and it is pretty faithful to the original story line and characters.
As with all the Alien Voices, this is
well worth a listen, especially if you are a fan of classic SF.
"The
First Men In The Moon" Video
"The First Men In
The Moon" was recorded for the SciFi Channel in front of an audience; this
recording was later released as an abridged video (lasting about 45 minutes)
(as was "The Lost World"). This is an excellent opportunity to see
how the story was recorded, with the Foley Artists (or sound effects!)
live on stage with the cast. William Shatner almost stops the show
when he makes his 'surprise' appearence as the Grand Lunar...
