At
first I thought The Simpsons was just another kids cartoon and more-or-less
ignored it. My first direct contact with any Simpsons merchandising
was a soft toy Homer I got at a Burger King in San Francisco whilst on
holiday there in 1990 (I'll dig it out and will post a picture here in
due course!) I hadn't at this stage actually seen an episode of the
show - it wasn't on terrestrial TV in the UK at the time and I didn't have
access to cable or satellite TV. Then BBC2 started to show it on
a daily basis and I soon became hooked - there was something about the
sense of humour in the show that made me realise it wasn't just for kids
- a reaslisation that has been reinforced over the years by conversations
with friends and colleagues chuck in a Homer quote to underline a particular
point they are trying to make, or who respond to an exclaimed "Excellent"
by rubbing their hands, Mr Burns style!
As the show
became more successful, merchandise started to appear - at first, mosly
themed around Bart, though now Homer seems to get more than his fair share
of product appearences! There have been a number of trading card
sets (another interest of mine!), and Simpsons related items still (occasionally)
appear at Fast Food stores. Not doubt there will be much more stuff
now that the movie is (at time of writing) imminent!
I won't
go into the history of the show here - there are other, far better, sources
of information if you want that sort of thing. No, here I will display
images of some of the stuff in my personal Simpsons collection, with links
for the DVD's (of course!) This page is a 'work in progress' so please
bear with me whilst I dig stuff out of cupboards for scanning... |
