The X-Files started off as a quirky cult tv show, with a pair or relative unknows in the staring roles and a disticntly odd sense of humour.  It quickly picked up an international cult following and so spawned tons of merchandise - including (of course!) trading cards.
The first sets were issued by Topps - until 2001, when Inkworks picked up the licence.
