My Favourite
'non' Trading Cards! |
|
|
Sometimes I come across things
that are not, strictly speaking, trading cards; they are made of card,
they are collectable, but they are not trading cards.
Things like tickets, pictures,
postcards, 'phone cards, etc. Things that are given away with video's and
comics, that are sent out if you join a marketing mailing list, or if you
are a member of a fan club. Things that you only get if you are in
the right place at the right time.
Here are some from my personal
collection... |

A set of 12 promotional
postcards, issued by TNT to promote the Fifth season of Babylon 5 and the
show's move to the TNT channel. All 12 cards had the same back.
I got these when I sent a damaged B5 book to DelRey, the US publishers
- they sent me back a replacement, plus a couple of other B5 books and
this set of cards! Excellent customer service! |

A ticket for the special premiere
screening of the Babylon 5 TV movie "In The Beginning". The screening
took place at the Warner Village cinema, Leicester Square, London, on Thursday
July 23rd, 1998. It was introduced by Bruce Boxleitner and Jerry
Doyle (Sheridan and Garibaldi, respectively)
I got it signed the following
weekend at the Wolf359 "The Crusade" Convention by Boxleitner, Doyle and
Mira Furlan, who was a surprise signing guest at the con! |

KP
Hula Hoops postcard
A few years ago KP ran a TV and
poster campaign to promote their "Hula Hoops" potato snack.
The TV ads featured Harry Enfield
and Paul Whitehouse as a pair 'blokes' in a pub discussing
what they would do if certain
celebrities tried to meddle with the shape of their favourite snack.
(The characters were based on
those appearing in Harry Enfield's TV series)
The poster campaign backed this
up by using variations of Enfield's catchphrase "Oi (celebrity surname)
No!"
This image (right) appeared as
one of the posters and was also issued as a 'promotional not for sale'
postcard (from which I took this scan!) I can't remember now where
I got it (probably at a card
show in London) but it wasn't
generally for sale. |

| BBC Radio version |

|
|
 |
A promotional
postcard issued by the BBC to advertise the rebroadcast (in 2002) of their
classic 13 part radio adaptation of "Lord Of The Rings" starring (Sir)
Ian Holm as Frodo, (Sir) Michael Hordern as Gandalf and John Le Mesurier
as Bilbo. |

(Movie version) |

6
Lenticular cards issued to promote the second of the Lord of The Rings
movies "The Two Towers".
The cards were stuck to the front
of various Nestle breakfast cereals, 1 per box.
Being lenticular, they are not
that easy to scan!
The cards are:
(top l-r) Aragorn; Gandalf The
White; Frodo
(bottom l-r) Aragorn; Saruman;
Eowyn and Aragorn |
 |
 |
 |
|
|
In 2003, Trebor Bassett issued
a set of 32 "Lord of the Rings" cards, inserted 1 per pack, into boxes
of 'Candy Sticks'. These cards are the same size as the old Cigarette
cards (or, even, the cardsthat used to be found in packs of PG Tips tea!)
The front of the cards depicts
a character, location or race seen in the films; the back had a part of
the map of Middle Earth - when all 32 cards are put together in the right
order, the map is revealed!
The cards are not numbered, which
could make trading difficult!
The cards shown above are (clockwise
from top left): Gollum, The Ring, Saruman and the back of a different Saruman
card in the set. |

| Miscellaneous |
|
An unusual promotional postcard
this one - it was issued in 2001 to advertise the Terry Pratchett
book "The Amazing Maurice and
His Educated Rodents" |
|
This is a sticker given away
in bookshops to promote "The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul" by Douglas
Adams - the second of his "Dirk Gently" novels.
I don't suppose there are many of
these left - this one has never been stuck to anything and still have the
backing! |
|
One of 5 cards available with
KFC Kids meals to promote the release of "X-Men 2". The card came
with a related action figure toy. This card is of 'Storm' played
by Halle Berry. |
|
An odd card this - I picked it
up in a local McDonalds. On one side there is a lenticular image
promoting the 'Salads Plus' range now being sold by McD in the UK; on the
other is a list of the Euro 2004 fixture dates. McDonalds are an
official sponsor of the tournament, being held in Portugal. (The
lenticular side actually has three different images, but I could only scan
the two shown above - the third, showing a bottle of Evian water in the
right hand corner, and more salady bits on the rest of the card could not
be seen by my scanner!) |

These are 3D lenticular cards
form the 2004 "Spiderman 2" movie - found 1 per pack, and randomly inserted
in boxes of Kelloggs "Cereal and Milk" bars (Frosties, Chocolate Frosties,
Coco Pops and Rice Krispies). There are 4 in the set, 2 showing Spiderman,
2 showing Doc Ock. |
|
|
 |
 |
The Release
of Thunderbirds the movie in 2004 saw a number of promotional ideas - including
these 'film cels' found in boxes of FAB Ice Lollies; there wre 8 in the
set, inserted 1 per box. (Sorry about the image quality, but I don't have
a transparency scanner...) |

At the Memorabilia Show, held
at the NEC Birmingham in November 2004, Patrick J Hammill (better known
to NSU Card Talk members as 'patdata') very kindly gave me this sketch
he'd drawn of one of my favourite authors, E.F.Benson. It was entirely
unexpected and I am indebted to him for his generousity! (For more
info on E.F.Benson, Click Here) |
Patrick is an accomplished sketch
artist who has drawn cards for the recent "Art & Images of Xena: Warrior
Princess" produced by Rittenhouse Archive in 2004 |
